Shimano 26 Vanquish CE: The Competition Edition Built for Retrieve Sensitivity
Shimano’s Vanquish has always been about lightness and instant response. The 26 Vanquish CE pushes one thing even further: retrieve sensitivity — how much you can feel through the handle. CE stands for Competition Edition, and it is aimed squarely at tournament bass anglers and area-trout specialists.
What makes it different
To beat the 23 Vanquish’s feel, Shimano made a bold trade-off: it changed part of the water-resistance design, within limits that do not affect real fishing. Some bearings on the handle shaft that were greased on the 23 model now run on oil instead, cutting rotational torque by about 25%.
- 1000SSS delivers even more retrieve feel than the C2000S — ideal for very fine lure control.
- C2500SXG shines when you need delicate, precise action at high gear.
- 2500SHG handles finesse work and a wider range of presentations.
It sits about 4,000 yen above the 23 Vanquish in Japan. There are eight models from 1000 to 2500.

Who it is for

- Area (managed pond) trout anglers who read lures through the handle
- Light-game anglers who want the most sensitive shallow-spool reel Shimano makes
Minagiman’s take
Every brand keeps raising the bar on retrieve sensitivity, and the CE shows there is still room to go further. The oil-for-grease swap is a clear statement: this is a competition tool, so if you mostly fish heavy salt in rough conditions, the standard 23 Vanquish is the safer pick. For finesse anglers who want to feel everything, the CE is the sharpest Vanquish yet.
