Shimano 26 Ocea Jigger LD: Left-Hand 2501MG and 2501HG Models Added

Shimano 26 Ocea Jigger LD lever drag jigging reel

Shimano’s Ocea Jigger LD is a lever-drag reel built for jigging. It is at home on nearshore boats but versatile enough for bigger targets. Now the long-awaited left-hand models have been added: the 2501MG LEFT and 2501HG LEFT, released in Japan in March 2026.

Key features

1. Infinity Drive and a double drag

Lever-drag reels have a built-in weakness: the higher you set the drag, the heavier the handle feels. The Ocea Jigger LD combines Shimano’s Infinity Drive with a newly developed double drag. Shimano says that, even at high drag settings, the winding torque is up to 30% lighter than previous reels of the same size.

2. 20 kg max drag that resists heat fade

Maximum drag is 20 kg. The high-durability drag resists heat fade, and Shimano says drag loss under set test conditions is about 25% lower than with a star-drag design. That is reassuring in a long fight.

3. Built for jigging, and kept light

The design idea is to cut weight without giving up strength or durability. The drive gear is skeletonised to save weight. The handle knob is 12% larger than before, but hollow construction with an aluminium insert keeps its weight the same. The frame is shaped to make thumbing the spool easy and to help you put power into the handle.

MG or HG?

The MG (5.7:1, 107 cm per turn) gives more winding power, which suits heavier jigs, deeper water and slower, more deliberate jigging. The HG (6.2:1, 117 cm per turn) picks up line faster for quicker jig actions and taking up slack in shallower water. Choose by the depth and the jigging style you use most.

My take

A lever-drag jigging reel with Infinity Drive, a 20 kg drag that resists fade, and now a left-hand option. Many jiggers wind with their left hand on spinning reels and wanted the same on a conventional reel, so these additions are welcome for tuna, amberjack and other heavy offshore targets.
