Shimano 26 Surf Gazer: An Easy-Casting Surf Rod for Bait Fishing
Shimano’s new 26 Surf Gazer is a versatile surf casting (nage-zuri) rod for bait fishing, and a great choice for anyone wanting to try Japanese surf casting. It handles everything from spring whiting (kisu) to rockfish, seabass and red sea bream, from beaches, rocks and piers. Released March 2026.
Key features
- Double-X construction. Spiral X — carbon tape wrapped diagonally — strongly resists twisting, and Hi-Power X carbon tape tightened in an X pattern over it also prevents crushing. The rod bends exactly in the direction you intend and delivers its full power. The release point is also wider, so beginners who struggle with release timing can still cast well.
- Cascon grip (special rubber type) that transfers the pulling hand’s force efficiently and protects the rod when it sits in a rod stand.
- Shorter reel-seat length. The distance from the reel seat to the butt end is shorter than before, making the rod easier to handle.

Minagiman’s take
Japanese surf casting for kisu is a classic, and long nage rods can feel intimidating at first. The Surf Gazer makes it easier — a forgiving release point, a grippy Cascon handle and a shorter seat. It is also a good backup rod for experienced casters.
