Maria Boar SS145: A Smaller Rock-Shore Jerking Minnow for PE #3 Tackle
Maria (Yamaria) has added a smaller size to its popular rock-shore jerking minnow series, the Boar. The new Boar SS145 is 145 mm and 50 g. It is more compact than the existing 195 mm and 170 mm models, and it is designed to be easy to use on tackle in the PE #3 class.
It answers a common question from rock-shore anglers: is there a lure that still works in strong wind and rough conditions, without going up to a bigger, heavier plug?
Key points
- 145 mm, 50 g, slow sinking
- The smallest Boar, a downsized model for PE #3-class tackle
- Different actions on jerks and on a straight retrieve
- Magnetic weight-transfer system
- Heavy-wire #1/0 trebles as standard
- 8 colours
- The third size after the 195 mm and 170 mm
Two actions in one lure
A jerking minnow does not have to be jerked. With short jerks on slack line, the SS145 slides hard to the side, then pauses level in the water. On a medium retrieve, it switches to a strong wobble-roll that you can use to cover water.
| Method | Action | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Short jerks | Wide sideways slides, then a level pause | To trigger yellowtail that are following |
| Medium retrieve | Strong wobble-roll | Covering water with just a retrieve |
So you can switch between jerking and winding to suit the conditions, and test more than one presentation with one lure.
Magnetic weight transfer for headwinds
A 145 mm minnow can raise questions about distance. Inside the SS145 is a magnetic weight-transfer system that moves the weight to the back on the cast. Maria says this helps it hold casting distance even into a headwind.
When it is most useful
- Rough, windy days on the rocks: when diving pencils and other surface plugs keep tumbling, it gives you stable action just below the surface
- High ledges: when it is hard to see the surface and feel what the lure is doing, its stability on a plain retrieve helps
- Low light at dawn and dusk: when you cannot see the lure, the strong retrieve action still works
- Lighter rock-shore tackle: when 195 mm or 170 mm plugs would need heavier gear than you want to carry
- Following yellowtail: the level pause after a jerk gives the fish a moment to eat
Who it is for
- Anglers who felt the 195 mm and 170 mm Boars needed tackle that was too heavy
- Anglers chasing yellowtail with PE #3-class rock-shore tackle
- Anyone who has struggled to work surface plugs in rough water or from high ledges
- Anglers who want jerk and retrieve options in one lure
- Rock-shore anglers targeting yellowtail amberjack (hiramasa) and Japanese amberjack (buri)
My take
Rock-shore lures tend to get bigger and heavier, and the tackle grows with them. The Boar SS145 goes the other way: a smaller, slow-sinking jerkbait that still holds up in wind and rough water. On days when surface plugs cannot do their job, it looks like a useful new option.
