Shimano Exsence Genos: Three Seabass Rod Concepts with Full X-Guide
Shimano’s Exsence Genos is a seabass rod series that has clearly had serious development effort. The technology is a big step up, the details are carefully built for real use, and the series is split into three distinct concepts.
Advanced technology, lighter rods
A light, strong Spiral X Core blank is paired with a full X-Guide setup, cutting weight by up to about 18% versus the previous series and letting the blank perform at its best. The carbon monocoque grip — a light, hollow, thin-walled one-piece structure — adds sensitivity, and trouble-free performance is much improved.
Three concepts
- Grand Stinger: a versatile all-rounder balancing power, control and sensitivity — the core of the series for fields all over Japan.
- Wild Contact: a stiff-but-bending regular taper that slices through headwinds with direct control — for rough conditions with waves, wind and current.
- Dark Force: a technical model mixing soft and strong — a delicate tip to control light lures and a powerful butt to work heavy lures crisply.
Key technology
- Full X-Guide system: X-Guide Aero Titanium in the butt reduces air resistance and line damage when casting; X-Guide 3D Titanium Top and 3D Titanium at the tip give smooth line flow and fewer tangles.
- Carbon monocoque grip, Hi-Res type: a faceted rear grip with flat sides and top that fits under the arm or against the elbow for better grip, control and fighting.
- Flat Side Seat (CI4+): a consistent side-cut design from the EVA fore grip to the seat body, optimised to 0.1 mm so power does not slip away.
The models
- Dark Force 90 (S90L+/F): a light spec with almost ajing-rod crispness — delicate tip, sharp fast taper through the belly and butt for precise lure control.
- Grand Stinger 88 (S88ML/RF): a technical all-rounder for small to medium rivers and crowded harbours; casts light lures stably.
- Grand Stinger 96 (S96M/RF): the core versatile model; 9’6” for range and distance anywhere.
- Dark Force 93 (S93ML·MH/F): soft tip and strong butt in a fast taper — two working ranges from light to heavy lures.
- Wild Contact 90 and 100 (S90MH/R, S100MH/R): traditional stiff-but-bending regular taper for distance into the wind and control in complex current.

Which model?
- Light lures, technical harbour fishing: Dark Force 90 or Grand Stinger 88.
- One rod for everything: Grand Stinger 96.
- Light and heavy lures from one rod: Dark Force 93.
- Wind, waves, surf and big rivers: Wild Contact 90 or 100.
Minagiman’s take
Lighter, longer-casting and far less trouble-prone — the Exsence Genos is packed with what serious seabass anglers want. The three concepts make it easy to pick a rod that matches your home water rather than a one-size-fits-all compromise.
