Daiwa’s shore-jigging rod series, the Dragger SX, is getting a new model built for working jigs with a baitcasting reel: the 103MHB JS (“Jigging Special”). It was developed with one of Daiwa’s shore-jigging specialists, with the aim of introducing more anglers to bait shore jigging, which is growing fast in Japan. It is due in December 2026 at ¥58,000 before tax.

Key features

1. Uses the power of a baitcaster to work jigs

Daiwa describes it as a rod that uses the strength of a baitcasting reel to work jigs with finesse and a light touch. The goal is to get yellowtail to bite in tough conditions, then keep control of the fight with the rod’s power.

2. From 40 g light jigging to 80 g and above

To make bait shore jigging accessible to more anglers, the jig range is broad. It is designed for everything from light jigging centred on 40 g jigs up to serious shore jigging with jigs of 80 g and more.

3. Tuned for this model only

The reel seat area, grip shapes and guide setup are all specific to this model. It uses a spiral guide setup and its own grip shape to keep jerks stable.

  • Light single-foot K guides at the tip for sensitivity and control
  • Stainless-frame SiC guides arranged to reduce tangles in a headwind
  • A taper that bends into the middle section, so you can keep jerking with little effort
  • Enough power to lift a fish that bites near the bottom

Daiwa warns that, on its JS models, making full-power casts with a bulky leader knot wound into the guides can break the rod.

What is the Dragger SX?

“Dragger” means to drag something hard. The series is for shore jigging where you lock the drag down and use the rod’s bend to bring yellowtail up. The high-end Breakthrough uses huge butt power to force big fish up and suits experienced anglers. The SX focuses on a rod that bends with the fish, so it is harder for a fish to take drag or flatten the rod. Daiwa says SX is no longer a “second line” but a series in its own right.

Bait shore jigging: pros and cons

ProsThings to watch
Strong winding power, so heavy jigs come back easilyYou need to manage backlash with brake settings and thumbing
The line goes straight in and out, so you feel jig action and bottom contact clearlyDistance drops in a headwind
Your thumb on the line helps you feel bites on the fallYou need a reel that holds PE 3 or heavier
Drag and clutch control help you stay in charge of the fightWatch the leader knot on full casts

My take

Bait shore jigging has long looked like something only experts do. The 103MHB JS is built so you can start with light 40 g jigging, which makes it much more approachable. If you are used to shore jigging with a spinning reel, switching to a baitcaster should completely change how you feel the bottom and bites on the drop. With a December release, it arrives just in time for the winter yellowtail season.
