Daiwa Dragger EX: Who Is the Flagship Shore Jigging Rod Really For?

Daiwa’s Dragger shore-jigging range gets a new flagship in October 2026: the Dragger EX, priced 112,000-115,000 yen.

Looking at the specs, my first thought was “this is not a surf rod”. PE 4-10 and lures up to 280 g – this is a rod for landing monsters. Here is what the Dragger EX is, read through its position in the whole Dragger family, so surf anglers chasing pelagics can tell which one they actually need.

Note: I have not handled one yet. This is based on Daiwa’s official specs and published information.

All three are three-piece, about 400 g and 99% carbon. PE sizes are Japanese gō numbers.

The concept: take control of the fight

Daiwa’s description says it well: lock the drag down hard, lift the fish when you want to lift it, and let the angler dictate the fight. Normal shore jigging goes: let the fish run, absorb it with the drag, wind when it stops. That does not work against some fish – the ones that win the moment they reach the rocks. Yellowtail amberjack (hiramasa) from the rocks, GT, big greater amberjack. With those, letting them run can mean losing them.

The Dragger EX is for lifting those fish without letting them run: drag locked, stopping them with rod power. The design pushes blank strength and twist resistance to that end.

Technology

TechnologyWhat it does
X45 Full Shield45-degree carbon on the outermost layer of the tip to resist twisting
HVF NANOPLUSLow-resin, high-density carbon plus Toray nano-alloy tech – strong and light
V-JOINT alphaA joint using nano-alloy material, improving how casting and action transmit
ZERO SEAT power gripA reel seat that keeps the reel foot from wobbling in a fight
Titanium-frame guidesOn every model, for weight saving

The one that matters most here is probably X45 Full Shield. If the rod twists in a fight with a big fish, power leaks away and you lose control. For a rod built to stop fish by force, twist control is everything.

Where it sits in the Dragger family

Dragger EX112,000-115,000 yen4-1050-280 gThe flagship, for monster-class fish

The EX is not a continuation of the X, MX or SX – think of it as sitting separately, a class above.

The interesting link with the Breakthrough

Lining up the specs, I noticed the EX and Breakthrough numbers are almost identical.

Dragger EXDragger Breakthrough

XXH class91XXHF-3: PE 6-10 / lure 60-280 g / 2.77 m83XXH-3: PE 6-10 / lure 70-210 g / 2.51 m
Price112,000-115,000 yen72,000-75,000 yen

In the HH and XH classes, PE range, lure weight and rod weight are almost the same. What differs is the materials and technology, and the price gap is about 40,000 yen. Only the XXH is clearly different: the EX 91XXHF-3 handles up to 280 g and is 26 cm longer – throwing heavier lures further than the Breakthrough 83XXH-3.

So the EX can be read as the Breakthrough’s power classes, with materials and build taken a step higher. Anglers using a Breakthrough who want “one level more” will benefit most clearly.

Can you use it on the surf?

This site is surf-focused, so honestly: for surf pelagics, you almost certainly do not need it.

FishingPower neededEX?
Surf flounder and flatheadPE 1-1.5, lures to 40 gOverkill
Surf inada to warasa (small-medium yellowtail)PE 1.5-2, lures 30-60 gOverkill
Surf buri (big yellowtail)PE 2-3, lures 40-80 gStill overkill
Yellowtail amberjack and GT from rocksPE 4+, lures 60 g+This is its real job

For buri from the surf, the Dragger SX 100MH or 100H is the realistic choice – half the price, and right for surf jig weights. Even the lightest EX starts at PE 4 and 50 g lures; with the 30-40 g jigs you usually use on the surf, the rod will barely bend, and you will get neither distance nor control.

It is different if you fish rocky areas for big fish – on Enshunada, somewhere like Omaezaki. Where a hooked fish can reach the rocks, letting it run can mean losing it, and the EX’s “lifting power” matters.

Who it is for

  • Anglers seriously chasing yellowtail amberjack and GT from the rocks – exactly what it is built for.
  • Anglers travelling for monster fish – three-piece, so it travels well.
  • Breakthrough owners looking to step up – same classes, better materials and build.
  • Surf pelagic anglers – the SX or X is enough; you do not need the EX.

Reel and line

PE 4-10 means a large saltwater spinning reel – for example the big sizes of the 26 BG SW or the 24 Stradic SW. Leader pairings are in my PE line and leader chart; above PE 6, leaders get thick and knots need care.

This rod shows its real worth with the drag locked down. My drag guide covers the basics, but the EX is designed for considerably heavier settings – leave margin in your line and knot strength.

Summary

  • Dragger EX: October 2026, three models, 112,000-115,000 yen.
  • PE 4-10, lures up to 280 g – a flagship for lifting monster fish without letting them run.
  • X45 Full Shield, HVF NANOPLUS, V-JOINT alpha, titanium-frame guides.
  • HH and XH classes match the Breakthrough in power, with better materials – about 40,000 yen more.
  • Only the 91XXHF-3 goes heavier and longer (280 g, 2.77 m).
  • Not needed for surf pelagics – the SX or X is the realistic surf choice.

The Dragger family has a wide range of models and prices, but the EX is clear about where and against what it is used. Ask yourself whether your fishing is against fish that win if they reach the rocks – that answers it.
