Shimano Ocellus Pencil 85F/130F: One Topwater, Five Actions

Shimano Ocellus Pencil 85F and 130F

Pencil baits usually force a choice: one that slides wide on the surface, or one that dives. Shimano’s Ocellus Pencil is designed to do both, with five distinct actions from a single lure. The 85F arrived in March 2026, and in September a larger 130F joined it — sold in rattle and Flash Boost versions.

Five actions in one lure

  1. Walk-the-dog — the classic side-to-side slide to cover water.
  2. Table turn — a sharp change of direction that creates a pause.
  3. Short dive — ducks just under the surface.
  4. Dive and sub-surface action — swims below the film to pull fish up from deeper.
  5. Panic action — erratic, fleeing-bait movement to trigger a chasing fish.

Shimano gets slide and dive into one body with a through-wire build and thicker walls, so which action you get depends only on your rod and reel input. Mixing actions within one cast is the real appeal.

Built to be tough

  • Through-wire construction raises line-eye and hook-eye pull strength by 72% over similar lures, according to Shimano.
  • Body walls are 18% thicker — useful around toothy fish and hard structure.
  • A large line eye gives the snap free movement and makes solid ring plus split ring connections easy.
  • Buoyancy is tuned to reduce mis-actions while keeping good water push, in both fresh and salt water.

When to use it

  • Search with walk-the-dog, then switch to panic action when a fish follows.
  • Use table turns to create a pause that triggers bites.
  • Use the dive and sub-surface action to lift fish from deeper water.
  • Fish it confidently around rocks and toothy species thanks to the strong build.
  • Choose the non-rattle Flash Boost for long, quiet, precise casts; choose rattle versions for more noise, for example for black bream (chinu).

Pick the size to match the bait: the 85F for small bait and light tackle, the 130F for seabass, larger bait and longer casts.

Minagiman’s take

Carrying lots of lures “just in case” often means hauling around boxes you never open. A single pencil that can walk, turn, dive and panic lets you change approach without retying — I would keep the 130F in my seabass and light pelagic box. The good news for overseas readers: the Ocellus Pencil is listed by Shimano outside Japan too.
