Jackall HIEI 93SF: A New Size for the Seabass “Bachi” Worm Pattern
Jackall’s HIEI is a seabass lure built to cover the bachi pattern: the winter-to-spring period when seabass feed on spawning sea worms (nereid worms, called “bachi” in Japan) drifting at the surface. A new 93 mm size has been added, so together with the existing 123 mm you can match the pattern more precisely.
HIEI’s main strengths are varied action and long casts. Bachi lures often give up distance, but HIEI casts well despite being slow floating. It also stays stable in the critical 0–30 cm layer just under the surface.
Two sizes
HIEI 93SF (new for 2025)
- Length: 93 mm
- Weight: 5.8 g
- Type: slow floating (0–30 cm)
- Hooks: treble #10, ring #2
- Price in Japan: ¥1,650 (inc. tax)
The 93 mm is effective when the worms are small or the fish are fussy. Its compact silhouette works on heavily pressured water.
HIEI 123SF
- Length: 123 mm
- Weight: 11.2 g
- Type: slow floating (0–30 cm)
- Hooks: treble #8, ring #3
- Price in Japan: ¥1,760 (inc. tax)
The 123 mm puts distance and presence first. Use it on wide surf beaches, river mouths, and where big worms appear.
Colours
There are 10 colours in total. 93 mm only: Bachi Pearl Pink, Bachi Matte Chart. 123 mm only: Inakko Sherbet (mullet fry), Chika Chika Devil. Both sizes: Glow Chart Pearl, All Matte Pink, Bio Green, Aka Bachi, Ao Bachi, Slim Sardine.
How I would use them
- Start with the 123SF to cover a wide area
- When you find fish, work the area carefully with the 93SF
- Retrieve slowly so the lure drifts with the current just under the surface, like a worm
- If HIEI gets no reaction, change approach, for example to a vibration lure
My take
Being able to choose the lure size within the bachi pattern is a real advantage. HIEI’s varied action and distance let you cover a lot of water, and the new 93 mm adds a finesse option for when the fish get picky.
