Shimano 26 Stephano BB: A Serious Entry-Level Kawahagi Rod for About ¥22,500
Autumn into winter is the “kimo-pan” season for kawahagi (thread-sail filefish), when their livers swell. For anyone starting kawahagi fishing from boats, Shimano has released a new rod: the 26 Stephano BB. Stephano is Shimano’s dedicated kawahagi brand, and the BB is its entry model, but it carries real technology from the higher models. Its tagline: “Tempt, feel, hook.”
Specs
| Model | Length | Pieces | Closed | Weight | Tip | Sinker rating | Price in Japan (ex. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M180 | 1.80 m | 2 (centre cut) | 93.5 cm | 94 g | 0.9 mm | 20–40 gou | ¥22,500 |
| MH180 | 1.80 m | 2 (centre cut) | 93.5 cm | 96 g | 1.0 mm | 20–40 gou | ¥22,500 |
| H175 | 1.75 m | 2 (centre cut) | 91.5 cm | 95 g | 1.0 mm | 20–40 gou | ¥22,500 |
All three are ¥22,500 before tax and very light at 94–96 g, with the reel seat at 300 mm (down-locking) and around 83–84% carbon. (“Gou” is the Japanese sinker size: 20–40 gou is about 75–150 g.)
Which model?
| Model | Character | For |
|---|---|---|
| M180 | Sensitive tip; great for seeing bites | Anglers who hate losing fish and like watching the tip; cushioning for bigger fish |
| MH180 | All-rounder for feel and sight | The first rod if you are unsure |
| H175 | Feel and control | Anglers who want to avoid snags and actively hook fish by feel |
Shimano itself says “if in doubt, choose MH”. The MH180 balances letting fish eat and setting the hook. The M180 also suits rigs with mid-line sinkers and attractors, all season. The H175 has a firmer section for a more aggressive, hook-them-yourself style.
Key features
1. Solid glass tip
A supple solid glass tip that does not bounce bites off. It picks up kawahagi’s delicate bites, helps them take the bait, and shows bites clearly.
2. Hi-Power X
Hi-Power X reinforcement reduces twisting, so the rod moves exactly as you intend. That matters when you are shaking the rod in tiny movements to tempt kawahagi.
3. Light, sensitive Multi-Palming CI4+ seat
A light, sensitive CI4+ reel seat. A lighter rod is more sensitive and less tiring when you tease fish all day. The low-profile shape fits any grip.
4. LDB guide and K guides against tangles
Kawahagi fishing involves a lot of rod shaking, so slack line wraps around the tip easily, and winding in with a tangle can break the fine tip. The Stephano BB has an LDB guide at the tip and K guides below, whose angled frames shed loose line.
5. Centre-cut two-piece
At 91.5–93.5 cm closed, it is easy to carry on trains and in small cars. If you break the tip, only the tip section needs replacing.
6. Details beyond its price
- An aluminium nut ring that is easy to tighten even with clam-covered hands
- A small, light EVA butt
- A metallic logo like the higher models
- A one-year breakage warranty from the date of purchase
The one-year breakage warranty is especially welcome for beginners, since delicate kawahagi tips are easy to break while you are learning.
Advice from Shimano’s instructor
A Shimano instructor recommends that beginners choose a rod with some stiffness rather than one that is too soft. Too soft, and you cannot feel the fish and just lose bait. The Stephano BB has that moderate stiffness, so it is easier to tell a kawahagi from another fish.
Compared with other kawahagi rods
| Rod | Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 26 Stephano BB | Stephano entry | ¥22,500; solid glass tip, two-piece, breakage warranty |
| 23 Stephano SS | Stephano mid-range | A step up for more sensitivity and control |
| Stephano XR / Limited | High end | For anglers who want to master kawahagi |
| Daiwa Shun-ei Kawahagi | Daiwa’s kawahagi rod | For Daiwa fans; higher price than the BB |
Start with the BB, learn the basics and find the action you like, then move up to the SS or higher.
Reel and rig
| Item | Guide |
|---|---|
| Reel | A small conventional reel (kawahagi-specific or light game baitcaster), e.g. Shimano Stephano SS 100HG/101HG |
| Line | PE about 0.8–1 (Japan no.) |
| Rig | Three-hook dropper (hooks 4–6, hook length 2–3, main line 3–4) |
| Sinker | Hook- or round-type 20–30 gou |
| Attractors | Brightly coloured mid-line sinkers and attractors |
| Bait | Clams (fresh-type clams get more bites) |
My take
An entry model often means “a cheap rod to get started”, but the Stephano BB includes a solid glass tip, Hi-Power X, a CI4+ seat and an LDB guide. The anti-tangle guides, replaceable tip section and one-year warranty clear away the things beginners usually trip over. If you are starting boat kawahagi fishing, now is the time, and the MH180 is the one to choose.
