Shimano’s light-game reel, the 25 Soare XR, is lighter than the previous model and adds more Shimano technology. The Anti-Twist Fin reduces line trouble, and a high-response drag helps prevent break-offs when a fish suddenly runs on fine line.

I fish nano-rubber (micro soft plastics) for rockfish on a 24 SLX baitcaster, but the lures are so light that a spinning reel would be easier. So this is a reel I have been watching closely.

Key features

1. Light handling and high sensitivity

The Magnumlite rotor gives a light retrieve and high sensitivity. Even with jig heads under 1 g, you can feel changes in current and tiny bites, and light lures stay easy to control.

2. Durable gears and strong winding

Infinity Cross gearing and Infinity Drive increase gear contact and spread the load for better durability. Lower friction also means strong winding under heavy load.

3. Less line trouble and a high-response drag

The Anti-Twist Fin greatly reduces slack line, line dropping below the spool, and twist. The high-response drag reacts quickly when a fish suddenly runs, lowering the risk of breaking fine line.

All models have a 45 mm handle. The C2500SHG also lists nylon and fluorocarbon capacities for anglers who prefer mono.

Best size for ajing

If you are not sure which to choose for ajing, start with the C2000SSPG. The power gear suits slow, controlled jig-head work, and the size matches most light-game rods. The C2000SSHG is the choice for faster line pick-up, and the 500SPG for ultra-light rigs.

My take

The 25 Soare XR adds Shimano’s newer technologies to a dedicated light-game reel and cuts weight at the same time. For ajing and mebaru fishing, where every gram and every small bite matters, the Anti-Twist Fin and the high-response drag are especially welcome.
