Shimano BB Braid: Affordable Japan-Made PE Line with Izanas Fibre
There are so many PE lines that it is hard to know which suits your fishing. Expensive line is wasted if you cannot use its performance, and very cheap line feels risky. Shimano’s BB Braid is the “just right” option — ideal for beginners and for anglers who fish often and re-spool frequently.
Shimano’s range includes Pitbull and Hardbull, which differ in braid count, strength and coating. BB Braid has no coating and gives up some performance to those lines, but its key strength is enough strength and durability for the job.
Specific gravity
BB Braid has a specific gravity of 0.98 — typical for PE, and below 1, so it floats. For light-game anglers, specific gravity matters because it affects how easily you can control very light lures.
1. Izanas fibre and made in Japan
BB Braid uses Izanas, a world-class ultra-high-strength polyethylene fibre also used in Shimano’s Pitbull, and it is made in Japan. That gives it the strength fishing actually requires at a price you will not mind paying again.
- Beginners on a budget: very cheap line can wear fast and cause trouble that ruins the fun; BB Braid avoids that at a fair price.
- Trying a new type of fishing: buy the size you need without investing in premium line.
- Frequent anglers: PE is a consumable, so a cheaper, reliable line is kind to your wallet when you re-spool often.
2. Three colour patterns
- Mantis Green: highly visible, so you can follow your line and lure and notice wind and current — the best all-round choice for beginners.
- Steel Grey: low visibility on and under the water, for pressured fish and clear daytime water.
- 5-Colour Marking: colour changes every 10 m so you can judge casting distance and, in vertical jigging or tai-rubber fishing, depth.
3. A wide range of sizes
- PE 0.6–1: eging, seabass, chinu (black bream) and squid.
- PE 1.5: shore jigging, light shore jigging and light jigging for pelagics and rockfish.
BB Braid is also a good baseline: once you know how it behaves, you can decide whether to move up to a coated premium PE or keep using it.
Minagiman’s take
Line always wears out, however good it is. A Japan-made PE with quality Izanas fibre that you can re-spool without thinking twice is a very sensible choice — especially for beginners and anglers who fish a lot.
