Shimano 25 Stella SW: XX Tough Drag, Specs and Which Model to Choose
The Stella SW is Shimano’s flagship saltwater spinning reel – the one people take after tuna, giant trevally and big yellowtail, both from boats and from the rocks. The 25 Stella SW is a full redesign, and the improvements go deep enough that the old idea of “the SW is just a tougher Stella” no longer really covers it.
This is a look at what changed, the three models, and the after-sales programme that comes with it.
Price
All three models list at 160,000 yen (excluding tax) in Japan.
What is new
XX Tough Drag
The biggest change. Previous models had drag washers only below the spool; the 25 model adds a large washer above as well. Together with Shimano’s Heat Sink Drag, Shimano says the loss of drag force from heat during long runs is cut by about 30 percent compared with the previous model. Bigger washers also mean more surface to shed heat – which is what matters in a long fight with a big fish.
The drag knob is about 25 percent larger too. When a big fish changes direction, a small knob is easy to fumble; the larger one makes quick, precise adjustment easier.
Infinity Loop, built for SW
Shimano’s Infinity Loop oscillation has been redesigned specifically for the SW:
- Winding pitch roughly halved compared with the previous model – denser, more even line lay, a better casting feel and fewer tangles.
- A revised worm-shaft turn angle that reduces line bulging at the edges of the spool.
- Two-speed oscillation – the pitch changes with the spool’s up-and-down stroke, to stop line digging in under heavy drag while still helping distance.
Infinity Cross gearing
The contact area between drive gear and pinion is about 1.3 times larger than before, for more gear strength and smooth winding under heavy load.
Sealing: X Protect and X Shield
Seals throughout the body, drag knob and line roller. Shimano quotes an IPX8 rating for water resistance – while still achieving a lighter-turning reel than before.
AR-C spool ring with Barrier Coat
A new spool-lip shape that reduces line jumping over the edge, with a hard-wearing coating to protect both the ring and your line. The ring itself can be replaced on its own if it is ever damaged.
Other details
- Longer handle: 80 mm, up from 75 mm on the previous 10000 – more leverage without a bigger body.
- CI4+ handle knob and tougher line roller parts.
The after-sales programme
Following Daiwa’s lead with the 25 Saltiga, the 25 Stella SW comes with a dedicated after-service programme in Japan running to the end of May 2031: a full overhaul once a year, with any parts that need replacing free (a basic labour charge of 4,510 yen applies). Check the current terms with Shimano before relying on it, especially if you live outside Japan.
Specifications
| Model | Gear ratio | Retrieve / turn | Weight | PE capacity (gō-m) | Max drag |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10000PG | 4.8 | 99 cm | 680 g | 4-400, 5-300, 6-250 | 25 kg |
| 10000HG | 5.6 | 116 cm | 680 g | 4-400, 5-300, 6-250 | 25 kg |
| 14000XG | 6.2 | 134 cm | 685 g | 5-360, 6-300, 8-220 | 25 kg |
All three have an 80 mm handle and 12 ball bearings plus one roller.
Which model?
- 10000PG – the power gear. With the longer handle, it fights above its size: the 10000 that does not feel under-gunned when a bigger fish than expected turns up. Good for jigging and heavy pulling.
- 10000HG – the all-rounder. PE 5 x 300 m with a fast 116 cm retrieve – suited to fast-moving yellowfin tuna and yellowtail-amberjack (hiramasa) on lures, where high-speed winding matters.
- 14000XG – the casting reel. Big line capacity (PE 6 x 300 m), the Infinity Loop for smooth line release, and the fastest gear for picking up line between casts. For topwater casting at tuna and big pelagics.
Verdict
The 25 Stella SW improves the parts that matter most in a long fight – drag heat, gear contact, line lay – and adds an after-sales programme that changes the ownership cost picture. It is a serious investment, and only worth it if you fish for genuinely big fish. If you do, it is as good as spinning reels get. For Daiwa’s answer, see the 25 Saltiga.
