Aquawave Metal Magic Slim: A Slimmer, Longer Blade Jig for Bigger Bait
The Metal Magic took Spanish mackerel blade fishing in Japan by storm. Now it has a new model: the Metal Magic Slim. As the name suggests, it is slimmer, longer and bigger than the original. The Metal Magic is known for micro-bait days; the Slim is built for other bait patterns too.
The Metal Magic is something of an original among blade jigs – many Spanish mackerel anglers have one in the box. Here is where the Slim fits, and how to use it alongside the original.
Specification
| Weight | Blade | List price (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 g | #1 | 950 yen |
| 40 g | #2 | 1,000 yen |
| 50 g | #2 | 1,100 yen |
| 60 g | #2 | 1,400 yen |
Every weight comes with a Cultiva Blade Double #2 hook. From 950 yen, it is very affordable for a blade jig – you can throw it freely even though Spanish mackerel fishing loses a lot of jigs.
Features
1. A slim, long silhouette for more than micro-bait
Slimmer, longer and larger than the original – usable on days fish are eating bigger bait, or when you want more appeal. Aquawave suggests rotating it with the original by bait size and activity, for Spanish mackerel and pelagics but also rockfish and flatfish.
2. A triangular, very low-centre body that will not spin at speed
The series’ triangular cross-section remains. The centre of gravity is very low, so it tracks straight without rotating even at extreme speed – the Metal Magic’s great strength. Spanish mackerel blade fishing is all about fast retrieves.
3. A new belly eye
The Slim adds an eye on the belly, for an extra hook or an extra blade – customise it as you like.
4. Dedicated blade, heavy ring, double hook
A Metal Magic-specific blade with low drag and strong appeal; a heavy flat split ring that resists opening on big fish; a double hook as standard – ready to fish out of the packet.
Original or Slim?
| Metal Magic (original) | Metal Magic Slim | |
|---|---|---|
| Silhouette | Compact | Slim, longer, larger |
| Best bait | Micro-bait such as whitebait | Bigger bait such as sardine |
| Appeal | Low-key; gets the bite | Presence; shows itself strongly |
Small bait: original. Bigger bait, or no response: Slim. Throw both in the same spot and stick with whichever works. Spanish mackerel sometimes bite the instant you change silhouette, even from the same school – two shapes of Metal Magic make that rotation easy.
Shore or boat?
The series is famous for boat blade fishing, but 30-60 g can be cast on shore jigging rods, making it a candidate for Spanish mackerel and pelagics from shore too. Start with 30 or 40 g, after checking your rod’s rating.
Colours
Eleven: Akakin, Iwashi, Pink Back, Zebra Glow, Green Gold, Bullpin, Silver, Pink Zebra Glow, UV Maji Shirasu, UV Pink Signal O.B. and Pink Back Glow. Iwashi or Silver for clear water; Akakin or Zebra Glow for dawn and stained water; UV Maji Shirasu for micro-bait-leaning days.
Things to note
- Being longer, the original may suit micro-bait days better.
- Double hooks snag more easily on rough ground.
- Spanish mackerel teeth cut leaders – go heavier.
