Oonibe (Japanese Meagre) on the Enshu-nada Surf: How to Target Metre-Class Fish in Winter

Oonibe (Japanese meagre) caught on the Enshu-nada surf

On the Enshu-nada surf there is a “phantom fish” every angler hopes to catch one day: the oonibe (Japanese meagre, Argyrosomus japonicus). It can exceed a metre, and the weight when it hits feels nothing like a yellowtail or flounder. A 100 cm fish was reported on Enshu-nada in October 2026, and big-fish season runs from now into winter.

Along with Miyazaki Prefecture, Enshu-nada is one of Japan’s best-known areas for oonibe. They are not numerous, but big fish are said to come closer to shore from late autumn into winter.

Oonibe vs nibe

Both are drums (family Sciaenidae) and make a grunting sound with the swim bladder when landed. The common nibe and the metre-class oonibe are different species, and the bigger they get, the warier they are.

Season

Sep–OctLots of nibe; oonibe small to medium
Nov–DecBig fish start coming in close
Jan–FebSome areas say mid-winter is the real season; chances continue despite the cold

Where to fish

  • River mouths such as the Tenryu — fresh water and bait gather.
  • Beaches near river mouths such as Nakatajima — better when stained water spreads.
  • Rips and current seams where bait collects.
  • Deeper drop-offs — bigger fish often patrol a little further out.

The common thread: current, colour and bait. Stained water around river mouths is a must-fish spot.

Time and conditions

ConditionNotes
Pre-dawn to first lightThe best chance — be in position in the dark
Dusk into nightAt river mouths, the night-time outgoing tide too
Stained waterAfter rain, when river colour spreads — high expectations
WavesSome swell is good, but put safety first in rough conditions

Hook strength matters: a metre-class fish is another level of weight and power, so choose heavy-wire, reinforced hooks or upgrade them.

Tackle and landing

PartRecommendation
Rod10–11 ft MH–H surf rod
Reel4000–5000 (saltwater-grade is reassuring)
LinePE 1.5–2
Leader30–40 lb fluorocarbon

Oonibe make a powerful final run in the shorebreak. Check your drag beforehand and use the waves to slide the fish up the beach. A big net or large fish grip helps.

Winter safety

  • Pre-dawn beaches are dark and dangerous — headlamp and life jacket are essential.
  • Winter sea wind chills you fast; dress warmly.
  • River mouths have fast current and deep holes — do not wade too far.
  • Never run into the shorebreak to land a big fish.

Minagiman’s take

Oonibe are not like flounder or flathead, which give you a chance most trips. You can go many sessions without a touch. People keep chasing them because one fish weighs more than any other. With a 100 cm fish already in October 2026 and steady reports around the Tenryu mouth, the signs are good for winter. Pre-dawn, stained water, river-mouth current — and keep casting: there is no shortcut beyond that.
