Hayabusa Jack Eye Sawara Spin 2: A Blade Jig Whose Hook Always Faces Up
Spanish mackerel (sawara) fishing is a big draw for lure anglers in Japan, from autumn into winter in the Kanto region and in spring in Kansai. Hayabusa’s Jack Eye Sawara Spin 2 stands out for one unusual feature: its single hook always faces upward as it swims.
Normally a single hook can face downward or swing around as you retrieve. The Sawara Spin 2 keeps its hook pointing up while it attracts fish, which improves hooking and reduces lost fish compared with the previous model.
Key features
- Upward-facing hook system: Hayabusa’s own design keeps the single hook pointing up during the retrieve
- Better hook-ups, fewer lost fish than the original model
- Compact: it also suits micro-bait patterns, when fish feed on tiny baitfish
- Low centre of gravity and slim shape: a stable posture that makes it easy to keep in one depth band
Sizes and colours
There are four weights (30, 40, 50 and 60 g), so you can match conditions, tackle, distance and depth. Seven colours: Real Scale Blue Sardine Net Glow, Blue Pink Blue Glow Zebra, Real Scale Chart Aka Kin, Matte Pink, Silver Blue Glow Zebra, Real Scale Fluorescent Orange Gold and UV Pink Candy.
Prices (Japan, inc. tax)
| Weight | Price |
|---|---|
| 30 g | ¥990 |
| 40 g | ¥1,045 |
| 50 g | ¥1,100 |
| 60 g | ¥1,155 |
How I would use it
- Straight retrieve: cast, count down to the depth of the school, and wind at medium to fast speed
- Weight: 30 g for piers and calm days, 40 g as the all-rounder, 50–60 g for distance and deeper water
- Micro-bait days: its compact profile is a good match when fish are feeding on tiny bait
My take
A single hook that always faces up is a genuinely new idea for sawara fishing. With four weights and seven colours, and the ability to match micro-bait patterns, it should be useful in any season.
