Anyone who chases Spanish mackerel (sawara) and its younger stage, sagoshi, knows the feeling: you hook one, and a few seconds later it is gone. Daiwa’s Samurai Jig R Spin Double Hook is aimed squarely at that problem. It is a new version of the Samurai Jig R blade jig with a double hook at the rear. It was released in Japan in July 2026.

Key features

1. Rear double hook to cut lost fish

The biggest change is the double hook. Sawara and sagoshi are known for tearing free from a single point or throwing the hook. Two points at the rear give more chances to stay connected and reduce fish lost to torn mouths and hook-outs.

2. Stable swimming at high speed

A low centre of gravity and a small blade keep the jig swimming straight even on a fast retrieve. Sawara often want speed, but many blade jigs start to spin or blow out when you crank hard. This one holds its posture and keeps the blade working.

How I would use it

  • Fast straight retrieve: the basic sawara method. Cast, let it sink to the depth you want, then wind fast so the blade flashes
  • Pick the weight by range and wind: 30 g for close range and calm days, 40 g as the all-rounder, 60 g for distance, deeper water and wind
  • Count it down: when the fish are deeper, count before you start winding and repeat the count that gets bites

Double hooks also make unhooking a little quicker than trebles, which helps when a school is passing and every cast counts.

My take

For sawara and sagoshi blade fishing, losing fish is the most frustrating part. A rear double hook on a jig that stays stable at speed is a simple, sensible answer. I would especially recommend it to anglers who are new to shore jigging and want to start targeting sawara.
