Daiwa Shoreline Shiner SL 14LD-S / 17LD-S: The Sea-Run Cherry Salmon Classic Returns
In Hokkaido and Tohoku, when spring comes, anglers stand on surf beaches and rocks chasing one fish: umi-sakura – sea-run cherry salmon (masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou). Some days you cast all day without a touch. That is exactly why landing one feels so special.
In that world, a Daiwa minnow ruled an era nearly 20 years ago: the Shoreline Shiner SL. It has finally been brought back – and not as a simple re-issue, but with a properly improved moving-weight system.
The Shoreline Shiner SL is a slim minnow in Daiwa’s Shoreline Shiner series, made specifically for sea-run cherry salmon. Its predecessors, the 14S-G and 17S-G, proved themselves across the north in the 2000s-2010s as this fishery took hold in Hokkaido. Nearly 20 years after release, requests for a re-issue never stopped, and Daiwa has answered them.

Features
1. SaqSas coating on the weight shaft
The biggest improvement is a SaqSas coating on the shaft the weight travels along. SaqSas is a special fluorine-based coating originally developed to help hooks penetrate. Applied to the weight shaft, it lets the weight move smoothly at even a slight tilt. Two things improve:
- After landing, and after a jerk or twitch, the weight returns quickly so the lure starts swimming sooner.
- On the cast, the weight reliably slides all the way to the tail, stabilising flight and adding distance.
Sea-run cherry salmon fishing means casting as far as possible across wide beaches and getting the lure swimming immediately. Smoother weight transfer is the most valuable improvement this fishing could get.
2. Silent Double Oscillate System Ver.S
As the name says, a silent moving-weight system. Cherry salmon are wary fish, and I think quiet, natural swimming gets more bites than rattle noise in many situations.
3. Slalom width changes with retrieve speed
Wind faster or slower and the width of the slalom (the big side-to-side swim) changes – wide and fast when the fish are active, narrow and slow when they are fussy.
4. Red trebles fitted
It comes with Owner’s red Cultiva ST-46RD trebles. Many cherry salmon anglers believe a red hook acts as a trigger, and not having to change hooks is a nice touch.
5. Six colours matched to the bait
| Colour | When |
|---|---|
| Almish Oonago | When sand lance (oonago / ikanago) are the bait |
| Sakura Pink | Dawn, stained water |
| Laser Maiwashi | Sunny days, sardine-type bait |
| HIT Green | The cherry salmon standard; low light |
| Laser Hokkai Katakuchi | When anchovy are the bait |
| Suke Mirror | Clear water, pressured fish |
Green and pink are the cherry salmon classics. My first pick would be HIT Green, then Sakura Pink. On days when the bait is obvious, switch to match sand lance or anchovy.
Compared with similar lures
1. The original Shoreline Shiner SL 14S-G / 17S-G
The 14LD-S and 17LD-S are re-issues of the 14S-G and 17S-G – the same size and feel, with an improved moving-weight system. For anyone who has treasured an old SL, think of it as the same familiar shape that now casts further and starts swimming faster. Being able to buy a new, improved SL – previously only found second-hand – is a big deal.
2. Vertice R 140S (same Shoreline Shiner Z family)
| Shoreline Shiner SL 14LD-S | Vertice R 140S | |
|---|---|---|
| Length / weight | 140 mm / 22.5 g | 140 mm / 28.5 g |
| Character | Slim, quiet, slalom | Distance-focused, tight wobbling roll |
| Main targets | Sea-run cherry salmon | Seabass, pelagics, flounder |
At the same 140 mm, the SL is 6 g lighter, slimmer and quieter. The Vertice R uses weight and distance to cover water for seabass and pelagics. For cherry salmon only, the SL; where pelagics and flounder also turn up in cherry salmon season, add a Vertice R for a wider rotation.
3. Metal jigs and jig-minnows for cherry salmon
Metal jigs and jig-minnows are also widely used. Jigs fly far on their weight and handle wind well. My approach: search wide and far with a jig, then show a minnow carefully once you know where the fish are. A minnow shows itself by swimming, so it is easier to tempt a pressured salmon.
How to fish it for cherry salmon
1. Straight retrieve as the base
A straight retrieve is fine. Start winding as soon as it lands; once it is swimming smoothly, bring it back at a steady speed.
2. Vary the speed
Speeding up and slowing down changes the slalom width – and that change can trigger a bite. Slowing slightly for a following fish is sometimes all it takes.
3. Add jerks and twitches
With the SaqSas shaft returning the weight quickly, it settles back into its swim straight after a jerk or twitch. Add one or two twitches during the retrieve for variation.
| Situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Shallow surf, calm days | 14LD-S |
| High rock platforms | 14LD-S |
| Headwind, big waves | 17LD-S |
| Targeting big fish | 17LD-S |
Cherry salmon basics: season, places, bait
| Item | Points |
|---|---|
| Season | Late winter to spring is the main season; earlier or later by region |
| Places | Surf beaches, around river mouths, rocks; where bait gathers and current flows |
| Bait | Sand lance, anchovy, small fish in general |
| Time | Dawn is especially promising; daytime too if fish are passing |
Cherry salmon often travel in schools, so the catch comes down to whether you can keep casting where the fish are, when they are there. That is why a minnow that casts far and swims instantly is so strong – and exactly where the SL’s improvement matters. Matching size and colour to the bait counts too: the slim SL suits sand lance days, and anchovy-like colours can change the response on anchovy days.
Cherry salmon are sometimes called a “one chance a day” fish. To not miss that chance, the most important thing is to keep casting a lure you believe in. With nearly 20 years of results, the SL can be that lure.
Tackle
| Item | Guide |
|---|---|

Things to note
- Designed for sea-run cherry salmon, so less versatile for other fishing than the Vertice R.
- As a re-issue, popular colours may sell out early.
- At 30.5 g, check your rod’s lure rating for the 17LD-S.
Summary
- A re-issue of the minnow that defined an era of sea-run cherry salmon fishing.
- SaqSas-coated shaft for a faster start and longer casts.
- Quiet Silent Double Oscillate System Ver.S.
- Red trebles fitted; six colours.
- 14LD-S (2,475 yen) and 17LD-S (2,915 yen).
A lure called a classic, coming back properly improved – that is something to celebrate. This winter and spring, why not go after that one fish again with a lure full of memories?
