Shimano World Shaula Limited: Three New Models for Seabass, Pelagics and Surf

Shimano’s World Shaula is the company’s go-anywhere lure rod series – short to medium rods that pack down to about 130 cm and are designed to handle everything from bass to saltwater pelagics. The World Shaula Limited is the premium version, and in November 2024 Shimano added three new models aimed squarely at seabass, pelagics and surf fishing.

These are expensive rods – around 100,000 yen and up. Here is what you get for the money, and who the three new models are for.

What sets the Limited apart

  • A real cork grip. Saltwater rods rarely use cork; the Limited does, like a high-end bass rod. Shimano uses top-grade cork, and it ages with use – the grip becomes uniquely yours over time.
  • Spiral X Core and Hi-Power X – Shimano’s blank technologies combined to raise strength by about 30 percent over the previous version while keeping it crisp to cast and work lures.
  • A smoothed grip with the steps between sections reduced as far as possible. In a long fight, a lumpy grip puts pressure on one spot and your fingers start to hurt; this one is designed to avoid that.
  • X Guide Titan 3D – cold-forged titanium guides with no seams, so line leaves more smoothly on the cast and has fewer places to catch.

The power is real: when a fish is hooked, the rod is built to stay in control rather than give the fish its head.

The three new models

2953R-39’6″3207 g10-503124,000

2703R-2 – heavy lures, short rod

Built to throw heavier lures for seabass, Spanish mackerel (sawara), warasa (medium yellowtail) and bluefin trevally. A 7-foot rod with real power – handy from boats and short-range platforms.

2832R-2 – lunker seabass and more

Aimed at big seabass, with pelagics, salmon and trout as well. The Spiral X Core and Hi-Power X combination gives both sensitivity and strength.

2953R-3 – the surf model

The one most relevant to this site: a 9’6″ three-piece for seabass, flounder and pelagics from the beach, with the distance surf fishing needs and the power to handle a big fish. As a three-piece it also travels better than a typical surf rod.

The rest of the Limited range

The existing Limited models run from 6’6″ to 7’6″, rated from about 6-30 g up to 30-150 g, with a 1652R-3 that can also handle jigs up to 180 g. Prices are roughly 100,000-104,000 yen excluding tax. The R in the model code is a regular taper; F and FF are fast and extra-fast.

Who it is for

  • Anglers who travel and want one high-end rod that packs short and covers a lot of fishing.
  • Seabass and surf anglers who want a premium rod with a cork grip rather than the usual EVA or carbon.
  • Not beginners on a budget – for that, the Major Craft 24 Solpara or Daiwa 24 Lateo make far more sense.

Verdict

The World Shaula Limited is a luxury: beautiful cork, a stronger blank, top-end guides. The three 2024 additions finally bring it into seabass and surf fishing properly, with the 2953R-3 the standout for beach anglers. You do not need a rod like this to catch fish – but if you want one rod that travels, fishes hard and gets better-looking with age, this is it.
