Shimano 26 Sephia BB: An Entry Eging Reel With High-End Technology

Autumn eging season is in full swing. This is when young bigfin reef squid (aori-ika) are easy to catch – and the time of year when the most people decide to try eging.

Right on time, Shimano’s entry-level eging reel, the Sephia BB, has been updated for 2026. In shops it usually sells for under 20,000 yen, yet a lot of technology from the higher models has come down to it.

Plenty of people wonder what makes an eging-specific reel different from a general spinning reel. This article covers the 26 Sephia BB’s specs and how to choose between its four models.

Note: this article is based on Shimano’s published specifications and new-product information. I will add my impressions once I have used it.

What kind of reel is it?

The 26 Sephia BB is the entry model in Shimano’s Sephia eging brand. The point is that it is not a general spinning reel – it is a dedicated reel built around what eging needs.

  • An eging reel with a street price under 20,000 yen (list price 22,500-24,500 yen)
  • Aluminium main shaft for less weight (5 g lighter than the previous C3000SDH)
  • CI4+ body – the same light, stiff material as the higher models
  • New: Infinity Cross and Anti-Twist Fin
  • Rapid Fire Drag – big drag adjustments with half a turn
  • Shallow spool that holds exactly 200 m of PE 0.6
  • EVA handle knob on every model

Specifications

Four models, all C3000 size. The differences are the handle (single or double) and the gear ratio (normal or high).

ModelGear ratioWeightRetrieve / turnHandleList price (excl. tax)
C3000S5.1215 g75 cmSingle, 50 mm22,500 yen
C3000SHG5.8215 g86 cmSingle, 55 mm22,500 yen
C3000SDH5.1230 g75 cmDouble, 45 mm24,500 yen
C3000SDHHG5.8230 g86 cmDouble, 45 mm24,500 yen

Shared specs: max drag 9 kg (practical 3.5 kg), spool 47 mm diameter / 17 mm stroke, 5 ball bearings + 1 roller, line capacity PE 0.6-200 m, 0.8-150 m, 1.0-120 m.

The list price is in the 20,000s, but in real shops it is often available for less than 20,000 yen – very accessible for a dedicated eging reel.

Key points

1. Lighter and stiffer – easier jerking

Eging means jerking the rod all day, so reel weight and how heavy it feels in the hand translate directly into fatigue. The 26 Sephia BB switches the main shaft – the core of the reel – to aluminium, as on the higher models. Combined with Shimano’s G Free Body, which moves the centre of gravity towards your hand, it feels lighter than it is. The CI4+ body is light and stiff, so less power is lost when winding.

2. Rapid Fire Drag to stop the hook tearing out

Bigfin reef squid have soft flesh. If the drag is too tight, the jig tears out and you lose the squid. Too loose, and it jets away in one burst. Rapid Fire Drag lets you make big adjustments with half a turn of the drag knob, so you can set the drag during the fight.

Until you know how big the squid is, set the drag a little loose and tighten it during the fight. Being able to adjust it instantly really helps.

3. Infinity Cross and Anti-Twist Fin

Both are well-regarded technologies from higher models:

  • Infinity Cross – improves gear durability. The winding feel lasts even with constant hard jerking, and it is easier to feel the small change when a squid grabs the jig.
  • Anti-Twist Fin – a fin at the line roller that controls slack line, preventing it falling under the spool or being wound on while twisted.

PE is thin and prone to trouble, so a feature that reduces tangles is especially valuable for beginners.

4. A spool that takes 200 m of PE 0.6 as is

The shallow spool fits exactly 200 m of PE 0.6, the eging standard. No backing needed – you can spool it up as soon as you buy it.

Choosing between the four models

The only differences are handle type and gear ratio.

Single or double handle?

Single handle (S)Double handle (DH)
Weight215 g (lighter)230 g
AdvantageLighter, more sensitive, easier to apply winding powerThe handle does not spin on its own when you let go after a jerk
SuitsAnglers who want lightness, or also want to try tip-run (boat eging)Anglers who want a stable fall – the classic eging style

A double handle is balanced left and right, so when you let go after a jerk, it does not turn by itself. That means no unwanted slack is wound in, and the jig falls more steadily.

Normal or high gear?

Normal (5.1)High gear (HG, 5.8)
Retrieve / turn75 cm86 cm
StrengthMoves the jig less, so you can work one spot slowlyPicks up slack quickly; faster to fish
SuitsLow-activity days, small harboursWindy days, searching wide areas, tip-run

If unsure: C3000SDHHG for a double handle, or C3000SHG if you want lightness. Autumn often brings windy days, and high gear’s fast slack pick-up makes life easier.

So who is normal gear for? Anglers targeting big spring squid, or working pressured squid slowly in harbours. It does not drag the jig too far, so it stays in front of the squid longer.

How it compares with higher Sephia models

There are higher models in the Sephia range, such as the 25 Sephia XR. But the 26 Sephia BB already has a lot of their technology, and for a first reel it is more than enough. Spending the money you save on jigs and PE line will do more for your catch.

Rods to pair it with

The Sephia BB’s metallic black and deep red are designed to match Sephia rods. If you want a matching look, go with a Sephia rod; if you want to keep costs down, an eging rod under 10,000 yen is fine too. Major Craft’s budget eging rods are another good option for a starter set – see the Major Craft 24 Solpara.

Rivals

At the same price, the main rival entry eging reels come from Daiwa’s Emeraldas series.

Common questions

Is it OK for a beginner?

If anything, it is best for beginners. The Anti-Twist Fin reduces tangles and Rapid Fire Drag lets you adjust the drag instantly – features that cut down on trouble.

Can I use a general spinning reel for eging?

You can. But a dedicated reel, with a spool sized for PE 0.6 x 200 m and a body designed around jerking, is more comfortable if eging is your main fishing.

Can I use it for other fishing?

As a C3000 it can double for light game and lighter seabass. But it is an eging design with a 9 kg max drag; for shore jigging for yellowtail, choose a general reel of 4000 size or larger.

Which model for autumn?

Autumn is about catching numbers and searching quickly, so high gear (C3000SHG or C3000SDHHG) is easiest.

Summary

  • Under 20,000 yen in shops, with a CI4+ body, Infinity Cross and Anti-Twist Fin.
  • Rapid Fire Drag helps prevent soft squid tearing free.
  • A shallow spool that takes 200 m of PE 0.6 as is.
  • If unsure: C3000SDHHG (double handle) or C3000SHG (lighter).

Autumn, with plenty of young squid, is the best season to start eging. If you are undecided on a reel, the 26 Sephia BB deserves to be first on the list. (For jigs, see the Egi-Oh K guide.)
