Daiwa 25 Overthere 4-Piece: A Travel-Friendly Surf Rod (88 cm Packed)

Daiwa’s Overthere is a popular surf series that suits beginners, and the 25 line-up now includes 4-piece models. Plenty of anglers drive, but crowded piers and more people fishing by bike, train or bus make a compact surf rod very welcome.
A 3 m+ rod will never be as short as a pack rod, but the 4-piece models pack down to 88–89 cm — about half the length of the 2-piece versions.
The new 4-piece models
- 109ML/M-4: for jighead rigs and 12 cm-class minnows and sinking pencils; the length helps on shallow, gently sloping beaches.
- 1010M/MH-4: handles jigs up to 65 g for longer casts and bigger targets. A powerful, crisp rod that still copes with jerking and lift-and-fall.

Which 4-piece?
If you are unsure, or just starting surf fishing, choose the finesse 109ML/M-4. Covering long distance helps, but plenty of fish are caught close in and right at your feet. Choose the 1010M/MH-4 if you regularly throw heavy jigs for yellowtail.
Minagiman’s take
For anglers who travel by public transport — or who want to fly to a fishing trip in Japan — a surf rod that packs to under 90 cm opens up many more beaches. At around 35,000 yen it is an easy way to get a proper long surf rod into a suitcase or onto a train.
