Want to carry plenty of lures, but end up with sore shoulders and no focus left by the evening bite? Shimano’s new Game Vest VF-278Z tackles exactly that problem with a simple idea: carry the weight on your hips, not your shoulders.

Key features

  1. L2 certified. It meets Japan’s L2 leisure life-jacket standard, which covers buoyancy, durability and comfort tests. Shimano’s entry Game Vest Light (VF-068T) is L3.
  2. Over 10% lighter than the previous VF-024U thanks to a new, softer foam, with the same L2 buoyancy — less bulk and more comfort on long sessions.
  3. Waist support belt. Like a hiking backpack, the hip belt moves load off the shoulders. A vest stuffed with lures can easily weigh 2–3 kg.
  4. Wide mesh shoulder straps that do not dig in and let heat escape.
  5. Big storage: each main pocket takes two standard lure boxes (e.g. Shimano CS-211V) — four in total — plus a back flap pocket for a larger box or rain jacket.
  6. Thoughtful details: a bottle holder (up to 600 ml) that doubles as a rod rest, a dedicated plier holder, D-rings for a fish grip, a long net D-ring, a removable Velcro patch and an included phone pouch.

I like that the bottle holder works as a rod rest — no more laying your rod in the sand while changing lures or taking photos.

  • Light and cheaper: VF-068T, fine for pier anglers carrying one lure box.
  • Capacity and less fatigue: VF-278Z, for surf and rocks.
  • Quick fit and summer comfort: VF-274W.

Daiwa’s DF-6224 Float Game Vest is a slightly cheaper alternative. If you are not tied to a brand, try them on and choose by how the shoulders and hips feel.

Who it suits

  • Surf anglers who walk and cast all day
  • Anyone carrying three or four lure boxes
  • People whose current vest leaves their shoulders sore
  • Waders
  • Anglers who want net, pliers and grip all on the vest

Note: on Japanese charter boats you may be required to wear a life jacket with the government “sakura” approval mark. Check the boat’s rules before you go.

Minagiman’s take

The biggest problem with life jackets is that people stop wearing them when they are heavy, hot or awkward. The VF-278Z keeps L2 buoyancy, sheds weight and moves the load to your hips — a vest you can actually wear all day. It is heavier and pricier than the entry model, though, so choose by how much gear you really carry.
