Daiwa 26 Freams: What’s New, Full Specs and Which Size to Buy
The Freams sits in an important place in Daiwa’s range: the cheapest reel that gets a lot of the technology from the expensive ones. The 2026 Freams replaces the 21 model with a darker, more understated finish and – the headline – Daiwa’s AIRDRIVE DESIGN, until recently a feature of much pricier reels.
The price has gone up from the 21 model, but it is still one of the most affordable of Daiwa’s current reels. This is what you get for the money, and which size to pick.
What is new
AIRDRIVE DESIGN
AIRDRIVE DESIGN is Daiwa’s name for its newest approach to spinning reels: making the reel feel as if the lure is responding directly to your hand. On the 26 Freams it brings two parts made of ZAION V, Daiwa’s carbon-reinforced resin:
- AIRDRIVE ROTOR – a lighter rotor. Less weight spinning around means the handle starts turning more easily and you feel more through the reel.
- AIRDRIVE BAIL – a lighter bail.
Every size is 5-10 g lighter than the equivalent 21 Freams.
MAGSEALED at the pinion
Daiwa’s magnetic-oil seal is fitted around the pinion gear to keep salt water and dust out of the reel – useful for anyone fishing beaches and breakwaters.
ATD TYPE-L drag
The drag is ATD TYPE-L, tuned for a faster, smoother initial response when a fish first pulls. (How to set it properly is in my drag guide.)

A quick key to Daiwa model codes: S is a shallow spool, D a deep spool, C a compact body (one size smaller than the spool), and P / H / XH are power, high and extra-high gear.
Which size?
| If you mainly fish… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light game: horse mackerel, rockfish | LT2000S-P or LT2000S-XH | Light, shallow spool for thin line |
| A bit of everything off a breakwater | LT2500 or LT2500D | The most versatile size in the range |
| Seabass in rivers and harbours | LT3000-CXH | Compact body, fast retrieve, PE 1.0 |
| Surf flounder and seabass | LT4000-CXH | PE 1.5, 99 cm per turn to take up slack fast |
| Light shore jigging, small pelagics | LT5000D-CXH | PE 2.5 at 300 m, EVA power knob |
| Heavier shore jigging | LT6000D-H | PE 3, strongest in the range |
If you are not sure, the 2500 is the one I would recommend for someone who wants to try lots of different fish from a breakwater. For beach fishing specifically, go straight to the 4000-CXH.
How it fits against other reels
If your budget stretches further, the Daiwa 24 Certate is the tougher, more durable step up, and the 24 Luvias the lighter one. On the Shimano side, the closest rival in spirit is the Miravel. For a rod to match, the 24 Lateo pairs naturally.
Verdict
The 26 Freams brings Daiwa’s newest design thinking – a lighter rotor and bail, better sealing, a smoother drag – into a reel that most anglers can still afford. It is not the cheapest Freams there has been, but it is the most complete. For a first serious spinning reel, or a reliable second one, it is an easy choice.
